Dr Norris is Psychologist-in-Residence and Director of the Psychobiology of Healing Program at American University, and past professor at Georgetown University Medical School.

Graduates of our Professional Yoga Therapy Training will be equipped to design and teach therapeutic yoga for groups and individuals with specific needs or health challenges. In this program, students will develop in-depth knowledge of the philosophy, theory, and application of yoga therapy as well as an understanding of scientific research methodology in the field of yoga therapy.

As a modular program offering rolling admission, students can work toward their full path of an 800-hour Yoga Therapy certification over the duration of 2+ years, giving them time to incorporate skills and gain practical experience. Our schedule features 5-day intensive modules “every other month” as well as asynchronous training on your own time, mentorship, and community practicum. Graduates will receive additional certification through The Mindfulness Center’s Meditation Teacher Training program. (Excludes transfer students.)

Prerequisites – Students entering our Professional Yoga Therapy Training program must have successfully completed a  200 Hr. Yoga Alliance registered yoga teacher training (or equivalent) with a minimum of 1-year teaching experience and a minimum of 1 year of personal yoga practice (1 year teaching requirement may be completed concurrently). At the completion of our program, graduates are eligible to achieve their professional Yoga Therapy (C-IAYT) certification with the IAYT.

This certification program is approved by the International Association of Yoga Therapists for Continuing Education credits.  IAYT APD underscores the educational excellence and professional recognition of this program and the esteemed faculty, ensuring that the course meets IAYT's rigorous standards, enhancing the credibility and professional development of yoga therapists and other health care providers who complete the training.

What's Included In The Program?

THE 135-HOUR CERTIFICATION PROGRAM INCLUDES THE FOLLOWING COMPONENTS
  • Course 109: Yoga and the Mind

    Students in Yoga and the Mind gain knowledge of yoga perspectives on the structure, states, functioning and conditions of the mind. These conditions of the mind and their expressions will be studied as expressed in such texts as the Yoga Sutra, the Bhagavad Gita and other texts.

     

    Course 110: Yoga Therapy for Mental Health

    Research shows that yoga therapy is helpful for many mental health conditions. Students in Yoga Therapy for Mental Health will gain knowledge of the role of yoga therapy in the treatment of many commonly occurring mental health conditions - from psychological distress to psychiatric conditions. Clinical studies as well as individual case studies are presented. Students learn therapeutic yoga and related mindfulness skills for working with clients with a range of mental health conditions, ranging from trauma/PTSD, depression, anxiety, addiction, insomnia and more. Students learn to work therapeutically with individuals and groups. The course also covers ethical considerations for yoga therapists working with clients with mental health conditions, and integrating or interfacing care with psychotherapy and psychiatry.

     

    Course 111:  Neurobehavioral Perspectives on Yoga Therapy

    Using yogic practices as the foundation for behavioral change, yoga therapy becomes a tool for transformation. Along with neurobehavioral scientist and yoga therapist Deborah Norris, Ph.D. students grow to understand the interrelationship between our brain and all other systems of the body. Students learn both how the nervous system regulates behavior, and how the practices of yoga, including breath, asana, yoga nidra and more, can be used to transform the brain, the body, and our lives.  Students will also learn about the influence of familial, social, cultural, and religious conditioning on mental and medical perspectives of health and healing. Students gain knowledge of models of human development, including developmental stages, lifecycles, and personality, and their importance to medical and psychological health and well-being.

     

    Course 112: Principles of the Therapeutic Relationship

    Student’s learn mindfulness-based communication skills: listening, presence, directive and non-directive dialogue, ability to recognize, adjust, and adapt to specific client/student needs in the therapeutic/professional relationship, dynamics of the therapist/client relationship. Students will learn the role of mindfulness in trauma-informed social and emotional learning skills. Knowledge of the scope of practice of yoga therapy and how to assess the need for referral to other professional services.
